Could You Have Fungal Toenails?

Toenail fungus (onychomycosis) is a slowly progressing infection that damages the nail over time.  This infection is the same one that causes athlete’s foot. The fungus lives in the toenail bed and feeds the keratin in the nail. The nail is discolored, thickens over time and can become painful.  A foul odor occurs, and ingrown nail can result.

The contagious fungus is acquired in a few locations: Public swimming pools, gyms and community showers. Sweaty feet can cause the initial infection and its progression.

There are several treatments on the market but use caution with self-treatment. Skin burns, and irritation may cause the infection to worsen.  Professional evaluation is the preferred course of action.  Keep your feet clean and dry for fungus prevention.  Change socks daily or more often if socks are damp with sweat.  Topical treatments are preferred to oral and a skilled podiatrist can suggest the appropriate topical treatment for your condition. An antifungal shoe spray used daily is advised.

Pueblo Ankle and Foot Care is now offering laser treatments for fungal nails. Call our office for an appointment to have one of our competent podiatrists evaluate and suggest the treatment that is right for you.
