Athlete’s Foot is a fungus caused rash on the skin of the foot and ankle and grows on the top layer of the skin. Fungus grows in warm, wet places such as the areas between your toes. This fungus spreads easily and can be obtained by walking barefoot on contaminated areas or by touching the toes or feet of another person who has it. The fungus then grows in your shoes, especially if your shoes are air tight and air cannot move around your feet.
The symptoms appear as cracked, flaking or peeling skin between the toes or side of the foot. “Moccasin”-type infection may start with soreness on your foot. Then the skin on the bottom or heel of the foot can become thick and crack. In severe cases, the toenails become infected and can thicken, crumble and even fall out. Fungal infection of the toenails needs separate treatment. Other symptoms of athlete’s foot may include red and itchy skin, burning or stinging pain and blisters that ooze or get crusty.
