If you want to change to a different Medicare plan or go to Original Medicare for next year, you can do it from October 15th, 2017 to December 7th, 2017. It’s called “Open Enrollment” for Medicare plans. The change will take effect on January 1st, 2018. In certain situations, changes are allowed at other times of the year. For example, people with Medicare who get “extra help” paying for prescriptions, those who have or are leaving employer coverage (and are 65 years old or older) and those who move out of the service area can make changes in their Medicare plans at other times of the year.
You can change to Original Medicare but you will need to decide whether to join a Medicare drug plan and whether to purchase a Medicare supplement policy. If you choose to have Medicare only you will not only pay for your monthly premiums, you will pay for a deductible and then 20% of all physician’s charges.
You can find information about Medicare plans in your area by using the Medicare Plan Finder on the Medicare website: http://www.medicare.gov. Then click “Find Health and Drug Plans.” Incidentally, Medicare’s phone number is 800-633-4227, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
